There comes a time when you have to say enough to restless nights on a too-firm mattress.

The Hypnia mattress topper, featuring 8 cm (3.14") of soft memory foam, could be just the upgrade you need. ☁️

This topper cushions your joints, relieving pressure and encouraging correct spinal alignment.

You can also take advantage of the money-back guarantee with a 30-night trial period. ⌛

We tested the Hypnia Ultimate mattress topper to see if it was worth it.

Advantages:

  • 8 cm (3.14”) of luxuriously soft memory foam for optimal pressure relief
  • It’s much deeper than standard toppers, making it ideal for those who want a noticeable difference in comfort
  • Contours around pressure points to prevent aches on the joints and lumbar region
  • Low motion transfer to reduce movement during sleep
  • Includes a machine-washable cover for extra convenience
  • OEKO-Tex certified cover tested against harmful chemicals
  • The cover has an anti-slip base, which is particularly useful for ottoman beds

Disadvantages:

  • We don’t recommend it for those who have a soft to medium-feel mattress
  • There are no straps, so it sometimes slides around the mattress during sleep
  • You’ll need to purchase extra deep fitted sheets if your mattress is over 25 cm (9.8”) deep
  • It is not easy to store away, so it's best for those looking for a permanent topper
  • Created a slightly warmer sleeping environment

Who is the Hypnia mattress topper most suitable for?

  • Those who suffer from joint pain
  • Those who have a too-firm mattress
  • Side and back sleepers
  • Indecisive shoppers who need a topper with a trial period

Hypnia mattress topper composition

The Hypnia Ultimate mattress topper is one of the thickest mattress toppers currently available in the UK.

It's the only topper Hypnia offers in the UK, but other options are available in non-UK markets.

It comprises of:

  • 8 cm (3.14”) memory foam
  • Machine-washable polyester cover
  • Anti-slip base

The memory foam provides a soft, body-hugging feel that contours around the joints. 💪

See how this works below:

You can see how the foam adapts to the shape of the hand before returning to its original form.

This makes it a perfect choice for those looking for a mattress topper to soften the feel of their mattress or relieve pressure on the joints.

We’ll go into more detail about the comfort of the Hypnia topper further down. ⏬

Hypnia topper cover

The Hypnia mattress topper is encased in a washable cover made from 100% polyester. 🧵

The cover is OEKO-Tex certified [1], meaning it's been tested against harmful chemicals.

While polyester may not be as breathable as cotton, it’s highly durable and flexible, making it easy to remove from the topper.

Hypnia mattress topper cover removed

We had no issues when removing the cover from our Hypnia topper.

It also features an anti-slip base, which helps to keep the topper secure on the bed.

We found this particularly useful since we have an ottoman bed frame and often need to lift up the base of the bed.

However, since the topper doesn’t have straps, we found that the Hypnia topper sometimes moved around at night. 🙁

We’ll go into more detail about this in our section on the drawbacks.

Can you wash the Hypnia mattress topper cover?

The Hypnia mattress topper cover is machine-washable.

Simply pop the cover into your machine at 40°C with your regular laundry detergent. 🧼

Is the Hypnia mattress topper comfortable?

The Hypnia Ultimate mattress topper has an extra deep layer of memory foam that gently cradles the body and relieves pressure on the joints.

We found that it adapted particularly well to the side sleeping position. 🔀

Take a look below:

Side sleeper on Hypnia mattress topper
The Hypnia topper contoured around the body in the side position.

You can see how the Hypnia topper follows the natural curve of the body, allowing the heavier regions to sink more deeply. ⚓

This encourages a neutral spine as the topper actively works with the body's natural shape rather than against it.

If you have a firm mattress, you may find that your body doesn’t sink into the mattress, but instead, the mattress pushes against the joints, which can create misalignment and cause hip and back pain. 😓

We also tested the topper in the back sleeping position:

Hypnia mattress topper
The Hypnia topper felt comfortable in the back sleeping position.

Again, the Hypnia topper adapted very well to the body shape, but this is less obvious since back sleeping requires less contouring.

However, you can see how the back is kept straight and aligns with the spine when resting on the topper.

We tested the Hypnia Ultimate topper with the Simba Hybrid, which is already a reasonably soft mattress.

We’d suggest pairing your Hypnia mattress topper with a firmer mattress for a more balanced medium-firm feel. ⚖️

But how about stomach sleeping?

Let’s take a look:

Hypnia mattress topper
We felt less supported by the Hypnia topper in the stomach sleeping position.

The Hypnia mattress topper wasn’t as suitable for stomach sleeping. 👎

The image above shows a small curve in the bottom of the spine, which we want to avoid when sleeping on the stomach.

Stomach sleepers require a firm mattress that helps the spine stay straight and neutral with the neck.

A firm mattress should also be paired with a soft, low pillow for optimal alignment in this position.

Therefore, stomach sleepers are unlikely to find a mattress topper suitable for their sleeping position.

Does the Hypnia mattress topper sleep hot?

Memory foam is known for creating a slightly warmer sleep, so we were apprehensive to try this memory foam topper during the peak of summertime. ☀️

Hypnia mattress topper
Memory foam is one of the warmest topper materials.

During testing, we experienced a slightly warmer sleep with the addition of the Hypnia mattress topper. 🌡️

We wanted to test this further with our thermal camera to see how well the Hypnia topper dissipated heat.

We lay on the topper for 10 minutes, analysed how well the heat dissipated after 5 and 10 minutes, and compared this with the Simba Hybrid mattress.

Take a look at the results:

Temperature results immediately after laying Temperature results 5 minutes after laying Temperature results 10 minutes after laying
Simba Hybrid with Hypnia topper 31.1°C 27.6°C 26.1°C
Simba Hybrid without Hypnia topper 29.1°C 27.3°C 26.5°C

As you can see, the temperature is slightly warmer immediately after laying on the topper than when just laying on the Simba Hybrid.

Hypnia mattress topper
Temperature of the Hypnia topper after lying down.
Hypnia mattress topper
Temperature of the Simba Hybrid after lying down.

But the Hypnia topper dissipated heat slightly faster than the Simba Hybrid. ♨️

This means heat will be released back out of the topper as you move around for optimal breathability.

Our results and experience concluded that you might experience a slightly warmer sleep with the addition of the Hypnia topper.

However, it shouldn’t make too much of a noticeable difference to your overall sleeping temperature.

Are there any drawbacks to the Hypnia mattress topper?

We tested the Hypnia Ultimate mattress topper for several weeks and experienced a few issues.

Let’s unpack them below. 👇

No straps to keep it secure

One standout feature missing from the Hypnia topper was the lack of straps on each corner.

Straps are helpful as they help to keep the mattress topper secure on the bed.

Even though the Hypnia Ultimate topper does feature an anti-slip base, and we put a tight fitted sheet and protector over the top, we found it still moved a little on the mattress. 🎿

Hypnia mattress topper
The Hypnia topper has an anti-slip base.

This was inconvenient as we had to keep readjusting the topper back onto the bed every few nights.

If this is a dealbreaker, consider a mattress topper with straps instead.

Our favourites include the Panda mattress topper and the Simba mattress topper.

May require extra deep sheets

The Hypnia Ultimate mattress topper is one of the deepest mattress toppers available in the UK.

This makes it a great choice for those looking for a noticeable difference in the feel of their sleep. 🤯

Hypnia mattress topper
The Hypnia topper adds more depth to your mattress.

However, this made our 25 cm (9.8”) mattress much deeper at 33 cm (12.9”) with the inclusion of the topper. 📐

Standard fitted sheets are around 20 - 35 cm (7.87” - 13.7”) deep, and our sheets didn’t quite fit.

Ultra-deep fitted sheets will fit mattresses between 38 - 46 cm (38” - 18.11”) deep, providing much more wiggle room.

Too soft for some mattresses

The Hypnia mattress topper is made with very soft memory foam that is particularly suitable for side sleepers.

Hypnia mattress topper
The Hypnia topper is made from soft memory foam.

However, since our Simba Hybrid is already reasonably soft, we found it too soft with this combination. ⚓

We’d suggest purchasing this mattress topper if your mattress feels too firm and you’re looking for additional softness.

Those who already have a soft mattress and want to make it feel slightly firmer should consider a firm mattress topper instead or replace it altogether.

Hypnia mattress topper sizes

The Hypnia mattress topper is available in standard UK mattress sizes, so it should sit flush with your mattress.

These sizes include:

  • Hypnia mattress topper single size: 90 x 190 cm (3’ x 6’3”)
  • Hypnia mattress topper small double size: 120 x 190 cm (4’ x 6’3”)
  • Hypnia mattress topper double size: 135 x 190 cm (4’6” x 6’3”)
  • Hypnia mattress topper king size: 150 x 200 cm (5’ x 6’6”)
  • Hypnia mattress topper super-king size: 180 x 200 cm (6’ x 6’6”)

The Hypnia Ultimate mattress topper is 8 cm (3.14”) deep, which is fairly thicker than the 5 - 7 cm (1.9 - 2.7”) standard mattress topper depth.

Hypnia mattress topper
Our Hypnia topper was 1 cm (0.39”) shorter than expected.

However, ours fell slightly shorter than this at just over 7 cm (2.7”).

Luckily, the Hypnia mattress topper has a 15-year warranty, and customer service informed us you could request a replacement for this slight anomaly.

Hypnia mattress topper prices & discounts

The Hypnia mattress topper isn’t the cheapest on the UK market. 💰

It comes at a fairly higher cost than the more budget-friendly Panda topper and the popular Emma mattress topper.

Hypnia mattress topper
The Hypnia topper is expensive.

The price falls in line with the more premium Simba Hybrid topper. ✨

However, it’s quite a bit deeper than some of these options, so you (literally) get more for your money.

If you’re looking for a topper that significantly changes the feeling of your mattress, then we’d say it’s worth the cost.

Hypnia mattress topper discount codes

Luckily, the Hypnia mattress topper is frequently discounted, which makes it better value for money.

Hypnia mattress topper
The Hypnia topper arrived in a cardboard box.

We were surprised by the size of the box, which was just a little bit smaller than a box you’d typically receive mattresses in.

This made it a little inconvenient to store, so keep this in mind if placing your order before you are ready to unbox your topper. 🕓

The Hypnia topper is also challenging to store away once unboxed.

We recommend the Fine Bedding Company Dual Layer topper or the Eve mattress topper, which can easily be folded and stored away.

Unboxing the Hypnia mattress topper

To unbox your Hypnia Ultimate mattress topper, you first need to remove it from the cardboard box.

It’s quite heavy, so we recommend doing this with another person to make things easier. 👯

The topper is compressed and vacuum-sealed in plastic wrapping.

Hypnia mattress topper

You can carefully cut away the plastic layer and watch your Hypnia topper expand like magic.

Once all the plastic has been removed, your Hypnia topper should expand fully.

However, some toppers may take longer, so we recommend waiting an hour or two before laying down on it.

You should put your mattress protector and sheets over your mattress topper and mattress.

You may need to purchase extra deep sheets and protectors if your mattress is already fairly deep.

Does the Hypnia topper smell?

The Hypnia topper had an unusual smell when first unboxed. 👃

Hypnia mattress topper
The Hypnia topper initially had a smell.

This is known as off-gassing and commonly occurs in vacuum-sealed products to release trapped odours.

Off-gassing isn’t harmful, and the smell should disappear after a few hours.

By the time we were ready to use the Hypnia mattress topper in the evening, the smell had disappeared.

They will then arrange for a courier to come and collect the topper, and once they receive it, you’ll get a full refund. 💰

Hypnia topper guarantee

The Hypnia Ultimate topper also comes with a 15-year guarantee.

This is one of the longest guarantees we've seen with a topper.

If you experience any faults with the material within this period, such as dipping or the topper not expanding to its full size, you will be eligible for a replacement or refund.

Should you buy the Hypnia mattress topper?

The Hypnia mattress topper is an excellent choice for those with a firm mattress looking to soften the feel of their sleep. ☁️

If you wake up with aches and pains on your current mattress, the Hypnia topper can help relieve pressure on these areas.

The Hypnia mattress topper encourages correct spinal alignment and support in the lumbar region, particularly for side sleepers who need more sinkage.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can you wash the Hypnia mattress topper?

You cannot wash the Hypnia mattress topper.

The Hypnia topper is made from memory foam, and it will become damaged if it gets wet.

However, you can wash the Hypnia topper cover in the machine at 40°C.

We also recommend using a waterproof mattress protector with your Hypnia topper to offer additional protection to the foam.

  • How does the Hypnia topper compare to other toppers?

The Hypnia mattress topper is an excellent choice and stands up well against other toppers.

The points below give you a better idea of the advantages and disadvantages of the Hypnia topper.

    Advantages of the Hypnia topper:

    • It’s much deeper than standard toppers
    • It includes a removable and washable cover
    • It has an anti-slip base
    • It makes a very noticeable difference to your sleep
    • It comes with generous discounts

    Disadvantages of the Hypnia topper:

    • It doesn’t include straps to keep the topper fixed to the mattress
    • It isn’t easy to store and fold away
    • It doesn’t have a guarantee
    • It’s not the cheapest topper available

The topper that is right for you depends on your requirements and circumstances.

If you’re unsure which topper to buy, consider some of our other mattress topper reviews.

    Other mattress toppers we’ve tested:

We recommend having a quick read of each of these topper reviews before finalising your decision.

  • What else does Hypnia sell?

The topper Hypnia offers is great, but Hypnia sells various sleep products, including pillows, duvets, and mattresses.

    Our Hypnia mattress reviews:

Unfortunately, we don’t have a review of the Hypnia memory foam mattress (also known as the Supreme Memory mattress).

However, we experienced great results from the Hypnia mattresses we tested.

These hybrid mattresses include pocket springs and memory foam layers for support and comfort.

Pocket springs provide excellent airflow to prevent you from overheating during the night.

As well as a pocket sprung and memory foam layer, the Supreme Hybrid has a natural latex layer for even more advanced support.

  • Do I need a topper or a new mattress?

Deciding between a new topper or mattress can be complicated.

If your mattress is less than 7 years old, is still in good condition, and feels slightly too firm for your sleep, a mattress topper could be the best solution to improve the comfort.

If your old mattress is over 7 years old, is dipping, sagging, or is no longer providing any support, then, yes, we’d recommend upgrading your mattress to a new one.

Our guide on the best mattresses in the UK has good quality options.

How to choose a suitable mattress

A comfortable mattress will support the body by distributing weight evenly across the mattress, supporting the alignment of the neck and spine and providing pressure relief on the joints.

You should choose the correct firmness for your sleeping position and consider any additional factors that may be important to you.

Some people may also consider edge support if they like to sit on the end of their bed or the hypoallergenic properties of the mattress if they suffer from allergies.

Most bed-in-a-box mattresses also include a sleep trial, so you can try your new mattress for a few months before deciding if it’s suitable.

The Nectar and DreamCloud mattresses include a 365-day trial, so you have a year to test them.

We recommend choosing a mattress with a minimum 7-year guarantee to protect you from material defects or manufacturing faults.
